Anne's Bath

Anne’s Bath: Creating a Sanctuary with Artisan Botanical Tile

When designing a bathroom, it’s easy to settle for standard, mass-produced materials. However, for Anne’s Bath, the goal was different: to create a tactile, nature-inspired sanctuary that feels like a piece of the wooded outdoors.

The Vision: A Botanical Retreat

Ann wanted her space to move beyond the functional. By integrating Whistling Frog's botanical series, we were able to bring the intricate textures of acorns with leaves and birds into the daily routine.

  • The Focal Point: A custom backsplash featuring relief-carved tiles that catch the light through shifting glazes.

  • Cohesive Palette: We used a mix of our signature greens and earth tones to ground the space in a natural aesthetic.

Why Small Accents Matter in Bath Design

You don't need to tile every inch of a room to make a statement. In Anne's Bath, we focused on "spot" placements among standard field tiles, which:

  1. Directs the Eye: The artisan pieces act as "jewelry" for the walls. See that gorgeous copper sink? Complete your tile inspiration with a custom made sink from Kim Barmes of Simply Copper Sinks in Vincennes, IN.

  2. Manages Budget: This approach allows for a high-end, custom look without the cost of a full-room custom installation.

  3. Adds Texture: Unlike flat, factory-made tiles, our hand-pressed ceramics offer a physical depth you can feel.

Handcrafted Tradition

Like all our work, every tile in this project was made in our Alden, MI studio and hand-stamped with our whistling frog seal of authenticity. This ensures that Anne’s Bath isn't just a renovation; it’s a continuation of a 35-year tradition in ceramic arts.

Penny Tile Perfection: Pairing Handmade Accents for a Custom Kitchen Backsplash

Whimsical Meets Wonderful: How to Create a Penny Tile Backsplash with Custom Charm

Have you ever admired a kitchen and thought, "That looks perfectly unique?" Often, the secret lies in the details—like a gorgeous backsplash that blends texture and art. We love how our handcrafted accent tiles can transform a simple penny tile installation, and the kitchen in the photo below is a perfect example of this beautiful synergy!

While we don't make the penny tile itself, our specialty is creating the unique accent tiles that truly elevate a backsplash from standard to stunning.

The Vertical Rain Wall: Elevating Bath Design with Handcrafted Texture

In modern interior design, the shower is no longer just a functional utility—it is a sensory experience. For this project, we moved away from traditional horizontal patterns to create a "Rain Wall" effect, using long, lean vertical stacks to draw the eye upward and maximize the sense of height in the space.

Architectural Impact: Verticality and Scale

Designers often use vertical lines to create a sense of grandeur. By installing our artisan green tiles from floor to ceiling, we created a seamless wash of color that mimics the fall of water.

Design Tip: Using vertical stacks in small bathrooms can make ceilings feel significantly higher.

Grout Selection: For this installation, we recommend a tonal grout to maintain the monochromatic "wall of color" look or a contrasting grout to highlight the unique, hand-pressed edges of each tile.

In biophilic design, these organic tones are proven to reduce stress and create a sanctuary-like atmosphere.

Erika's Backsplash

Wanting to honor the previous owners of her California home. Using their last names as inspirations, we were commissioned to make the tiles: Hawley (holly tile), Orr (lost oar tile), Loveberg (lovebirds tile), and Cheswick (Chess piece with a wick). Other complimentary handmade tile surrounds and finished the project. Now that’s making the house a home!
